2007 Journeys BBQ Round 3 – Pittsburgh

Scattered thunderstorms were the initial forecast for the day’s events at Stop #3 at the Monroeville Mall. Like most weather forecasts in the Greater Pittsburgh area, it was bound to change. Saturday morning brought us amazing sunshine and a great day.

Local radio media for this event was good as we had two live studio appearances for Rob and Big. We also had an early morning live performance by Swollen Members, which was off the hook. Later in the day on Friday, Dave Mirra and Josh Kalis did a lunchtime interview on 105.9 the X, and did a great job promoting the BBQ.

DC brought members from their skate team including Sean Malto, Ryan Gallant, Josh Kalis and Rob Dyrdek. Some of the members of the DC BMX crew also showed including Chad Kagy and Dave Mirra. To top it all off, DC also brought out FMX ripper Dustin Miller to sign autographs and take photos with lucky fans.

The biggest draw of the day was Rob and Big. With the launch of the 2nd season of their hit MTV show, huge crowds were in attendance to see the boys and they did not disappoint. Rob and the rest of the DC team made their way to the mini ramp and rode an hour long demo. The mix of skate amd BMX was well received and there were a lot of cheers for each group.

Following the demo, the DC crew headed for the shade and a huge autograph session. Most people could not believe the level of talent that were signing autographs. People started lining up at 7am that morning to get a chance to meet the DC team.

The Rockstar Energy/Metal Mulisha FMX demo team rode with amazing consistency and really worked the crowd. Monroeville Mall was a great set up for the FMX demos, because there was a large hillside situated right next to the demo area. This gave the fans the opportunity to sit and watch the demos in a bleacher style setting. The FMX demos were a huge hit as many of the fans were screaming like crazy. The 2nd DC demo went off without a hitch, followed by a very short autograph session.

The Converse Battle of the Bands was off the hook and was won by local band Clearview Kills. These guys had amazing energy and really got the Pittsburgh crowd moving. They received a record number of votes, with almost 55% of the votes received. Finishing up the day were the boys from Swollen Members. What an insane show! They did a great job and really got the crowd into it. There was crowd surfing and lots of bouncing. Great energy, and a nice end to a perfect day in Pittsburgh.

Next stop on the BBQ tour is New Jersey.
